Helena’s Chocolate Café & Crêperie serves to satisfaction (Review)
Having a bad day? Desperate to satisfy a sweet tooth? Wanting to try something new? Here’s a quick fix: head to Helena’s Chocolate Café & Crêperie.
Located on 36 West High Street, Helena’s is an authentic restaurant that features an extensive range of delicious desserts; their specialties include chocolates, crêpes, and macaroons.
Everything at Helena’s is homemade; according to their website, www.helenascafe.com, they sell several kinds of coffee, including cappuccinos, espressos, and lattes, which are “[freshly made] from Lavazza beans.”
Their hot chocolate is made from “Belgian chocolate shavings,” and their chocolates are “handmade.”
A particular favorite among students at CHS is the strawberry and nutella crêpe. These thin pancakes are served with nutella inside and a strawberry drizzle on top, with powdered sugar and orange shavings.
“Their food tasted delicious; you could tell it was fresh,” senior Abby Baughman said.
The staff at Helena’s have a flair at decorating their desserts, making them even more tantalizing to their customers.
Their macaroons come in several different flavors like rose, vanilla, and coconut. The pastel-like colors complement them, and they are a savory treat. Helena’s sells cupcakes and muffins, as well.
In addition to their desserts, Helena’s provides a relaxing atmosphere.
According to their website, “[Helena’s is] a slice of Europe in downtown Carlisle.”
The aroma of pastries and other treats enhances the restaurant’s atmosphere, along with the scent of freshly brewed coffee. The bustle and conversation of other customers also adds to the charm of the café.
Adorned with a yellow and purple color scheme, the restaurant is complete with many tables and chairs to accompany several customers. Couches are at the front of the café, allowing friends to chat and sip coffee or read a book.
Helena’s is also a popular venue for studying.
“[Helena’s] is a great way to support local business[es], as well as enjoy[ing] a cozy environment that’s perfect to catch up with friends or curl up with a good book. Their espressos are [also] heavenly,” senior Erin Ulrich said.
The selection of desserts at Helena’s is amazing, and there is a treat for everybody. The café’s welcoming ambiance satisfies its customers, and it is the closest thing to authentic European cuisine in Carlisle.

The buckwheat crepes are especially delicious. My favorite is a savory one with spinach and feta.

I actually just went here for the first time after seeing this article and I was highly impressed…I was not aware that a small town such as Carlisle in the middle of rural Pennsylvania could have such cultured and authentic food. I had the Dulce de creme crepe (or something like that) and it was amazing! Carlisle needs more places like this!
