Let’s Review: 2014 hits and happenings in the arts and entertainment world
2014 has been a year to remember. Many great albums, TV shows, movies, games and pop culture events have made an appearance.
2014 has seen several publicized celebrity freak-out and redemption moments. On May 24, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian tied the knot in Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy. The wedding guest list included several Hollywood stars such as Lana Del Rey and John Legend.
A less fortunate moment in 2014 was the passing of Hollywood actor Robin Williams. Williams took his own life on August 11, 2014. Williams was said to have been struggling with Lewy Body Dementia and clinical depression, both of which may pushed him to take his own life. Williams,a much decorated actor and comedian with five Grammys, two Emmy’s, and six Golden Globe Awards, will be missed.
Artists and musicians are constantly creating and putting out new music. Some great albums that have been released in 2014 include Mind Over Matter by Young the Giant, MØ by New Mythologies, PARTYNEXTDOOR 2 by PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Run The Jewels 2 by Run The Jewels. These albums helped make 2014 one of the best years for music in recent memory.
Along with music, 2014 brought with the it the greatly anticipated second seasons of the Netflix web-shows Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, and the fourth season of the FX series American Horror Story: Freak Show. Orange is the New Black is a show about a woman named Piper Chapman that has to spend 15 months in jail after being convicted of transporting drugs for her drug dealer girlfriend ten years ago. This show has captivated many and the second season had been awaited impatiently.
House of Cards is about Frank Underwood, a seedy politician who manipulates everyone and everything on his way to the top. American Horror Story: Freak Show is an anthology series that is based off a different topic each season. Previous seasons were based around witches, an asylum, a haunted house and now a circus. These fan favorites are long anticipated and greatly enjoyed.
Most of the major block-busters that have been produced this year are The Fault in Our Stars and The Hunger Games Mockingjay part 1, which are both based on novels of the same name. Both had fans raving, and both made a lot of money at the box office. Superhero movies also won big this year, with both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 receiving tons of praise, and truckloads of money.
Videogames had a rough year, with many of the biggest games falling victim to launch issues like shotty online servers and glitches. Some games, like “Mario Kart 8” and “Titanfall” launched without any major faults, and stand strongly against many of the more disappointing games released this year. Surprisingly, the best game of the year is actually the same game as last year: “Grand Theft Auto V.” The game was re-released this year on the next-gen consoles, and brought with it better graphics, improved gameplay, and best of all, a “first-person mode.” This allows the player to see the game through the eyes of their character, and completely revitalises the game.
Some of the biggest things to come out of 2014 were actually in the tech department. The iPhone 6 was released, which brought with it a bigger screen and revamped operating system to the popular line of phones. Also, the “Oculus Rift” has been making waves with it’s bevy of new development kits and software updates which promise to bring in an era of true virtual reality.
2014 was a big year filled with awesome moments and sad disappointments. The year has had it’s ups and downs like any year, but if it taught us one thing it’s this: 2015 is shaping up to be an awesome year.

2014 was a great year for the arts and entertainment world, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for 2015. I can’t wait to see what the nest season of House of Cards has in store.

2015 definitely brought a lot of new things to our country and into the hands of teenagers and others. The Hunger Games and Mario Kart 8 were probably the most popular in my opinion. Hopefully 2016 comes out with some great things as well!
