Carlisle Coffeehouse: the overflowing cup of performance

Coffeehouse adds poetry to the show.

Carlisle High School is constantly refilled by the music of the Coffeehouse each year.

The Coffeehouse at Carlisle is an event that happens at various times throughout the year, and it now has added poetry along with the different music that is performed.  It’s held either in the Swartz cafeteria, auditorium, or the Fowler courtyard.  The last show was on January 18th, and the next show will be in the spring.

Although the music allowed many to perform, poetry involves even more students from the high school.  The poetry aspect sparks more interest in the whole student body.

“The students kept reminding me that we needed to provide a venue for students to share their poetry with a live audience, too, so we started with a few student poets to test the waters, and that part of the program has continued to grow as well” said Coffeehouse advisor Sue Hench.

“I have never gone to a Coffeehouse yet, but knowing that there is music and poetry now, I would love to come.  It would be cool to see my friends in a different atmosphere,” said junior Autumn Rowe.

Along with the plentiful student involvement, teachers also get involved in this event each time.  Whether a teacher is coming to perform or watch, responses are usually very joyous.

“As a teacher I only have a limited opportunity to see the ‘person-in-the-student.’ To see other dimensions of students, be it musical, theatrical, or athletic is a joy. And let me tell you, Carlisle’s got talent,” said geo-environmental science teacher Bruce Rowland, who also is actively involved in Coffeehouse.

The Coffeehouse is an event that allows different people to come together, especially with the addition of poetry.  Many encourage students to become involved with the event and give it a try.

“I would encourage others to join in on this awesome experience.  [Coffeehouse adviser] Mrs. Hench does an amazing job organizing it, and it is such a great atmosphere for people who have a passion for music and the arts,” said CHS alumni Morgan Weitzel.
