Have You ‘Herd’? October 2014
Welcome! “Have You ‘Herd’?” is our new school beats section, where we will update you on events and programs at Carlisle High School. Check back often to see what your favorite organizations are doing.
The Art Department
There are numerous things that are completely new in Carlisle High School’s art program.
There is a new teacher, Ashley Gogoj, who is now teaching Design, Crafts, and Painting classes. Gogoj formerly taught at Lamberton Middle School.
Art teacher Courtney Kapraun moved from the high school half-time position to the full-time position at Lamberton Middle School. Theresa Cipolla has been hired to fill the half time position in the high school. Cipolla is a recent graduate of Millersville University and is very excited to be working at Carlisle High School.
There also are a few exhibits for students at Shippensburg University and Wilson College.
October 20 – Nov. 2: The annual PAEA Student Exhibit that is held in conjunction with the state Art Educator’s conference is soon. This year the exhibit will be held at Fallingwater in the art gallery known as The Barn and Fallingwater.
October 25 & 26: The Yellow Breeches Student Art Competition Exhibit will be held at the Carlisle Expo Center. This is the third year for this art competition and students from Carlisle High School have been represented as winners each year.
The Music Department
The music department has news as well. Carlisle High School just had the first Coffeehouse which was a huge success. This gives students an opportunity to perform music or read poetry. Many creative numbers were performed and it gave the students an opportunity to perform in a laidback setting.
Also, the marching band is having a great start to their season. The marching band has their entire show on the field and is working to keep improving how it sounds and looks. The band was just at a band clinic on Saturday Sept 27, which they hope will improve the marching and playing.
The symphonic band has several students that are trying out for District band.
Band instructor Byron Mikesell said, “I hope to get all of my students trying out to make at least first or second place.”
Mikesell has very high expectations of the students and he feels that they will succeed.
Choir director Daniel Schade also has students trying out for District Choir and is hoping to have a great turnout for that. Schade is also involved in the musical and really hopes that several students will participate in it because it is always a great experience for the students.
Want to help the Herd? Please consider supporting the Periscope program. Your donation will support the student journalists of CHS and allow us to purchase equipment, send students to workshops/camps, and cover our annual website hosting costs.
This is Morgan Dellinger’s first year in Periscope. She has taken on the role of school beat managers. She is a senior and is really enjoying her last...

Props to all of our CHS art teachers! You guys are awesome, talented, patient, wonderful and generous enough to share all of these qualities with your students. You do great work and your students reflect this with their beautiful works and talents.

As a former marching band member, I am very happy to see that the marching band was included in the school newspaper. We had a very successful season this year.

I am very excited to hear of the many new arts and music teachers this year. I usually do not hear much about this stuff but it is interesting to hear more of the news about these interesting opportunities at our school. it will be exciting to learn more about how this turns out.

I really like how you mentioned about the band! We had a really good start and went all the way! We did finish 6th at the ACC’s and we were really proud! I know that the band tried their hardest and the color guard spun the flags their hardest, and we made a good time! It’s interesting to also read about all the Art teachers! I’m glad to hear that Mrs. Gogoj is at the high school now!

As much as they sometimes have a negative connotation, the arts are a really valuable asset to schools. They provide a creative outlet for students which is highly underrated. When everything is so academically focused, it is really nice to have a chance to break away from the crowd.

The expansion and hard work of all arts departments effects all of us, not just those directly involved in the programs. These programs allow students to productively show off their skills and get many involved with their peers that otherwise they would not be involved with.

This is great news. The art students produce is amazing, and I look forward to seeing it every year. The band has a great show and they just finished up an awesome season. I hope that all students that audition for districts get in.

All of this news sounds like good news! I think our art department is overall really great, especially the artwork that comes out of some of the art classes and the marching band. I was glad to see coffeehouse mentioned as well; I think that the First Cup was stellar.

I realize I’m late, but I was very happy to see this. Being in the marching band (drumline) myself, I know I put in a lot of work towards the activity…at least 4 days a week! Sometimes it’s disappointing not getting any kind of recognition, so thank you Morgan! We had an awesome start to the season and we’re about to have an awesome end at ACCs!

The marching band does really well at games and in competitions, and I don’t think we give them enough credit. They deserve to be more well known, and I’m glad they are getting more recognition here. It’s also really nice to hear about the art department, since I haven’t hear much about it since freshman year when I took Drawing and Composition.

It is really cool that Carlisle High School’s art and music departments are getting more credit and attention. The students involved in such programs are very talented, committed and hardworking. They have constantly deserved more for all the work they put in.

I really like how the marching band was added to the music department. I agree we are working to improve the show and we hope that everyone that watches it will like it.

I agree. Everyone works so hard, and it’s nice to be included in the school’s paper.
