Have You Herd? Digging Deeper into Clubs
Project Share
The Project SHARE club is an interactive club that Carlisle High School offers. Along with meeting within the school walls, Project SHARE also meets outside of school. It is a great way to get out there and volunteer to help those less fortunate than you.
The students that are in this club work in the green house and make cards to send to Project Share. All of the food that they grow in the green house is donated to Project Share. The students have been wiping dirt off the outside of the green house to get it ready for winter. Also they took new soil and put it in the green house for the vegetables to grow.
Math teacher Kimberly Felknor Edwards runs the club and is outside with the students helping out as well.
Seniors Erin Newcomer and Kaylee Weigle said, “[It’s a] great way to give back to the community.” Students volunteer inside and outside of school.
Weigle says, “[Project Share club is a] fun and interactive good way to get out of the class room.”
Project Share does a farm stand sells vegetables to help fund project share. They also have cookie drives during the winter.
Newcomer says, “A great way to feel good about yourself doing something good for the community.”
The club is for student volunteers that want to help the community. Every club they have a representative come from Project Share to give the students tasks to do. Also, Giant food store is collecting money from the receipts to donate food to Project Share.
Recently, they made Thanksgiving cards for people who go to Project Share. That is a good way to get out and do something good for people who are less fortunate.
Sci-Fi club
A club that is very busy and enjoys eating popcorn is the Sci-Fi club. The Sci-Fi club had thirty people in it with officers Tiffany Smith, Aby Harlan, Madison Light, Anna Lippert, David Shepherd, Chaza Fares, and Connor Hamilton. Each of them plays an important role in the Sci-Fi club to make it more enjoyable for the students.
They have Monday Movie Madness almost every Monday after school. They have already watched a variety of Sci-Fi, fantasy, and superhero movies together while eating popcorn. This way the students can enjoy watching a full length movie instead of it getting broken up into pieces like it does during club. So far they have watched “Ender’s Game”, “Godzilla (1954)”, “Godzilla (2014)”, “The Time of the Doctor”, and “Pacific Rim.”
They also have Throwback Thursday during the weeks where faculty meetings take place on a Monday. They watch older movies to introduce the club members to classic films; so far they have only done this once and they watched “The Labyrinth.”
During the actual club period they do all sorts of activities such as play Doctor Who Bingo, trivia contests, watch movie trailers, and watch pilot episodes of Sci-Fi television shows. The Sci-Fi club obviously has a blast learning new things about Sci-Fi and the movies.
The big event that the Sci-Fi club has this year is the Second Annual Sci-Fi Saturday Benefit Event on May 30th. There will be a variety of authors, artists, graphic novelists, interest groups, and vendors in the Swartz cafeteria. The event will be happening 11:00-5:00 and the Sci-Fi club is looking to double the seating of the guests, so come on out and watch Carlisle High School’s Sci-Fi club in action. There will also be a Star Wars group in authentic costumes, too.
The Sci-Fi club will be collecting non-perishable food items for Project Share, Clothing items for Community Aid, and pet items for Furry Friends network. So not only are they a super fun club, they want to help and do help other organizations with giving back to the community.
Want to help the Herd? Please consider supporting the Periscope program. Your donation will support the student journalists of CHS and allow us to purchase equipment, send students to workshops/camps, and cover our annual website hosting costs.
This is Morgan Dellinger’s first year in Periscope. She has taken on the role of school beat managers. She is a senior and is really enjoying her last...

What a great opportunity for volunteering! To be able to work in and outside the school with plants an the outdoors sounds like so much fun, not to mention community friendly.

I wish I had known about this club sooner! I seriously just signed up for clubs in homeroom and I didn’t know that this was available. I’ll definitely think about switching to this club because it sounds really helpful and fun!

This is a really great program for all students, it allows them to get involved in their community and to feel good while doing it. I know that it is difficult for many students to volunteer with school, sports, theater and other activities. That is what makes this club so great, students can volunteer during school hours! They can do good without stressing themselves out.

Since I am in class council and that counts as my club I haven’t looked at the club options since 9th grade. It is great to hear that there is a PROJECT share club. I had no idea. That is a fantastic way to get kids involved with community service and helping them realize the importance of giving back. I think that the club system in general is a great way of teaching kids to look for what they are creatively interested in. I think that when a person has a creative interest and has the opportunity to explore it like in clubs it leads to great things. Being in a good club could ultimately show someone what they want to be in life!

I think the sci-fi club is a great way for people who enjoy sci-fi movies to get together and watch a good movie. It allows them to discuss it at length with people that share the similar interest.

I love the idea of the Project SHARE club. I am apart of Key Club and some of our members recently went to Project SHARE to help out on distribution day. It is a good feeling knowing you are helping out people who are less fortunate than you. It also looks good that CHS is involved in helping out the community in and out of school.

It’s interesting to see just how much the sic-fi club does, I had no idea that it had meetings on days other than club days. I signed up for the silent reading club just because it’s pretty much a study hall, so I can use the time to do homework. It’s great that at CHS, there are clubs like mine where you can just work on homework, as well as clubs where you can explore things that you’re interested in.

CHS has such a great variety of clubs, and it’s good to see two of them being highlighted. It sounds like members of both clubs really enjoy them. Also, it’s nice to see a club like Sci-Fi do community service because you’d think they just watch movies, but in reality, they do good for their community too.
