December Athlete of the Month: Haily Midgely
Haily Midgely
Freshman
State Competitor for Cross Country
Q1: How did you finish at states? Were you proud of this? Was it a personal best?
A1: I finished 115th at states with a time of 20:24. I was really proud of my time, and overall I think that it was a really great race, not only for me but for the whole team. This was my personal best for the season and a lifetime personal record, since this is my first season! I was really impressed with my personal record because the state course is one of the hardest courses that we’ve run all season. I know that a lot of the team had awesome times too, and I’m really proud of us for having such a great season.
Q2: What other hobbies do you have?
A2: I really enjoy writing poetry and dabble a little bit in drawing portraits, but I’m definitely no Emily Dickinson or Frida Kahlo! I love listening to music if that counts as a hobby. Camping and hiking is another passion of mine, I’m actually training to be a counselor at Camp Thompson.
Q3: How does Carlisle’s cross country team relate to other teams you’ve been on?
A3: I used to play soccer, for nine years actually. I had to choose between soccer and cross country this season and it was a very hard decision. I eventually decided on cross country because I was told that I had more potential with running. I’m really glad I chose cross country because the team is just awesome. We’re all just really close, and there’s never a dull moment when we’re together. Boardman is a really great coach; he focuses not only on the team as a whole, but he listens to individuals as well and makes sure that we’re all okay. I never felt that sense of family with soccer; that’s basically what a cross country team is: a big, crazy family.
Q4: What’s your favorite memory from this season?
A4: That’s a really difficult question because there’s just so many. I’d have to say that the one that stands out the most for me is when we found out that we won districts. I remember everyone standing in pure disbelief for a moment. Then we all just went crazy with euphoria. It didn’t matter who you were standing next to; you just hugged them and hugged them because you know that everything you worked towards had finally paid off. We were all screaming like lunatics and I’m sure it looked like we were having seizures to all the bystanders because we were that excited. We all congratulated each other individually because it was a team effort, we stuck to the game plan and the result was better than anyone ever imagined. Those girls were (and still are) like the big sisters I never had. They were nice to a freshman like me and treated me like their friend, not as a lowly underclassmen. They were what really made this season a great memory.

I had to pleasure to meet and run with Midgely this year for cross country. It’s crazy that a freshman can be far far better than I was at running. Good job!

We were all so proud of Midge this past cross country season! She was in our varsity line up as a freshmen and made the all time freshman PR list!! crazy! It’s also nice to hear that the team felt like such a great group of people to the underclassmen. Nice article 🙂
