National Trumpet Competition, Messiah College

Q1: Describe what you will be attending in the next few weeks.

A1: [On March 20] I am going to be playing at the National Trumpet Competition at Messiah College.  I was one of the 30 high school trumpeters to get selected from all over the country for this competition.  I also am going to State band in a few weeks and I will be ending my long PMEA journey that I have had this year.

Q2: How long have you been playing trumpet?

A2:  I have been playing trumpet since 4th grade so for six years now.  I started playing trumpet in elementary school at North Dickinson with Mr. Mikesell.

Q3: Are you excited for the events coming up?  Why or why not?

A3:  I am very excited for the upcoming events and at the same time nervous.  I have practiced so hard over the last few months and it’s good to know that it will hopefully all pay off soon.  I have had an incredible journey so far meeting so many new people and I have learned so many things.  It’s kind of cool how you never know what to expect.

Q4:  What other hobbies do you have?

A4:  Some other hobbies that I have are biking, rock climbing, backpacking, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.  I also like to hang out with my family and friends.

Q5:  For someone else playing an instrument, what advice would you give to them about reaching full potential?

A5:  Advice I would give to another young musician is keep practicing and find a skilled musician that you can listen to because then you know what you want to sound like.  Practice everyday and work as hard as you can because there are so many good opportunities with music you never know what one choice can lead to.  Try to go to as many concerts as you can because they will only make you a better musician.  And most importantly have fun.  Music is supposed to be enjoyable and if you enjoy it so will your audience.

National Trumpet Competition Recap

Q:  Give a recap of the competition and explain whether you enjoyed it or not.

A:  I made the live semi-final round but I was not in the final three.  I enjoyed it very much and this was the first year I could play in the high school division so I have two more years to make the finals.  While there I got to see the president’s own marine band and the airmen of note.  I also got to attend master classes by John Rommel and other artists.
