DECA Gets Down to Business at Districts
Tuesday, December 1, Carlisle DECA had its “most successful” year, according to DECA advisor and business teacher, Joe Wagner.
18 of the 39 Carlisle DECA participants sent to compete at the district competition, held at the Best Western Premier in Harrisburg, advanced to the state competition at the Hershey Lodge from March 1-3.
Facing off against over 200 students from seven schools, competitors completed “a 100 question multiple choice test” and were “assigned a role play where they will have a problem to solve in their particular business category,” said Wagner.
Senior Shane Cruce and his partner, senior Chuckie Nist, for example, were in “the position of ethics offices at a company” and had to present their “solution to a problem to a judge,” according to Cruce.
Students used resources such as practice books and practice exams and studied for “a couple weeks,” Cruce described.
The competition confronts students with problems one may face in a business career. Cruce, interested in the business field, believes it is important to find “ways to solve them now.”
Similarly, junior Melisa Kadric thought “the role play is helpful” because it “shows you real life things.”
Overtime, “we have seen an increasing number of winners,” noted Wagner.
