College close by: Dickinson offers a full-tuition scholarship to Carlisle residents
The search for the ideal college is already a challenge in and of itself. When cost is thrown on top, it creates for even more of a tribulation. In an effort to help with this process, Dickinson College recently announced that they are offering a full-tuition scholarship which only residents of Carlisle, Pennsylvania are eligible to apply for.
A local, private, liberal arts institution, Dickinson offers top-tier education at high costs, yet the Dickinson-Carlisle Scholarship includes free tuition for a four-year education. The pivotal goal of the scholarship is to encourage students to further their education and create an even more enriching community.
“We were really trying to be inclusive of the entire Carlisle community,” said Angela Barone, the Director of Admissions Communications at Dickinson, as well as the Co-Coordinator of the Dickinson Admissions Volunteer Society.
Many Carlisle students disregard Dickinson as an option for college, as it is right down the road. Katherine Schock, a German teacher at Carlisle High School and a Dickinson Alum, hopes that the scholarship will encourage students to consider Dickinson.
“I think this is a great way for them [Carlisle residents] to consider what I think is a really great college and to encourage them to apply,” said Schock.
Barone also hopes that the scholarship will encourage more Carlisle students to consider Dickinson as a potential option for college.
“I hope we will see more students looking closely at Dickinson and that the scholarship will spark interest, as Dickinson is a really fantastic choice,” said Barone. “I would love to see more Carlisle students coming to Dickinson.”
Several CHS students have already taken the steps to apply for the scholarship.
Dickinson College has always been a top choice for senior Erin Kennaly, who applied for the scholarship this year.
“My brother just graduated from Dickinson, and I saw how much he loved it there,” said Kennaly. “Dickinson offers great classes and incredible opportunities that I want to take advantage of.”
Younger students who are planning ahead have also begun to look at the scholarship. Junior Michael Smith is an active member of the Carlisle community and is interested in the scholarship. He believes that it helps create a greater partnership between the college and its community.
“[I think] it’s great to integrate Dickinson into Carlisle and vice versa,” said Smith. “For my whole life, I’ve been a part of Carlisle, and I’m eager to combine Dickinson in the community which I have been admiring from afar.”
The deadline to apply for the Dickinson-Carlisle Scholarship is January 15, 2018, and the winner will be granted with the scholarship mid-March.Until then, Dickinson will be encouraging Carlisle students to look into the school and apply for the scholarship.
“Every resource at the college is focused on helping students maximize what they get out of these four years, said Barone. “The possibilities are almost endless.”
