The 67th Grammys were held on Sunday, February 1st, 2024, and were hosted by Trevor Noah for the 4th time in a row. They were held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and focused on raising money to help rebuild the city after the recent fires that destroyed many homes and businesses.
One major aspect of the Grammys is the show stopping performances. There were many this year, but there was a big focus on the nominees for the New Artist award, with several of them performing back to back. The most notable of these were Benson Boone, Doechii, and RAYE. Boone started his performance in the audience before having his suit ripped off, revealing a sky-blue bodysuit underneath. Once on the stage, he did multiple flips, including one off of a piano. Doechii’s performance of “CATFISH” and “DENIAL IS A RIVER” included a lift, two conveyor belts, and excellent choreography. RAYE performed her song, “Oscar Winning Tears,” accompanied by background singers and a small orchestra. Her vocals were incredible, especially near the end of the song when she held a note for over ten seconds. Another notable performance was Chappell Roan’s in which she performed “Pink Pony Club” with a giant pony on stage and all her dancers dressed as clowns.
The Grammys always have celebrities attending the show who are dressed to the nines. While there were many interesting and beautiful outfits, a few stood out amongst the rest. The winner of the New Artist Grammy, Chappell Roan, wore a Jean Paul Gaultier dress which featured images from Edgar Degas’ many paintings of ballerinas. She paired it with sheer blue gloves and a hat made of strands of fabric. Another nominee for the award of New Artist was Sabrina Carpenter who wore a pale blue backless dress with blue feathers around the waist and hem. She also wore a diamond necklace on a long chain that went down her back. While not nominated for any awards, Cardi B still made an appearance at the show as a presenter. She wore a gold and black sequined dress with the end being made of feathers in white, black, orange, and pink. Altogether, the dress was a bright and unique eye-catcher. Finally, another standout outfit was Sierra Ferrell’s, which won four Grammys for the genre of Americana music. She wore an all-white ensemble that had white gems all over it. It consisted of a ballgown-style dress, a headpiece, a collar, and a scepter. Part of the puffy sleeves and part of the skirt had a layer of shimmery, transparent fabric draped over it, adding to the majestic and magical appearance of the dress. Due to its beautiful and unique appearance, it was one of the most notable outfits of the night.
This year had a lot of popular and great nominations, but only one could take home the biggest prize, Album of the Year. The winner was Beyonce with her album Cowboy Carter, which also won Country Album of the Year. She was the first black woman to win the country award. The song of the year was “Not Like Us,” part of the Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake feud in which this diss track essentially ended it. He also won four other awards for the song. The other big award of the night was that of the best new artist, which Chappell Roan won, accepting with a speech about how music records should give their artists a livable wage and health insurance.
Other winners include the Producer of the Year (Non-Classical), Daniel Nigro, who has worked with Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan, and Amy Allen, who won Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical) for her work with Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Justin Timberlake, among others. Some winning albums by genre were Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet which won the award for the Best Pop Vocal Album, Brat by Charli xcx which won Best Dance/Electronic Album, and the winner of the Best Rap Album, Doechii’s Alligator Bites Never Heal.
Overall, the Grammys, as always, made a splash in pop culture and paid recognition to the best music and artists of the year. Many awards were rightfully received, excellent performances were held, and fashionable outfits had their moment on the red carpet. It will be exciting to see what new music will be released and nominated for next year’s awards.
