We deserve more options at CHS (Editorial)
Elective offerings should be broadened.
February 25, 2014
Whenever it comes to course selection time, we may never realize how many elective classes we should have that aren’t there. Many of us choose the one that will get us an easy grade. For this reason, I feel we should have more choices to pick for our electives.
For example, I think we should have Zumba classes, or maybe a yoga class to help with people who do sports, or need to be healthier. Stretching is really important. Gym class is a joke to most people so I feel that students should be able to choose whether they want to take Zumba in replacement of a gym class. Some people need more spare time to stretch when they have sports after school. It also helps the stressed become more relaxed. We could either choose Zumba over gym or have both.
Also, we should be more open to languages. CHS only offers Spanish, French and German. I feel we should have more languages open to us. Like Farsi, Italian, Dutch or Korean. Sign language would also be very important in the actual world to learn to communicate with the deaf community. What would you do if you were a waitress and a deaf person came in that only knew sign language; wouldn’t you want to be able to communicate with them?
Astronomy would also be a good class we could use since many people find that interesting and it could inform people more of what’s out there that not many of us will be able to see for ourselves. CHS could get a black screen to help us understand astronomy more by seeing where everything is as if we are right there. They could also put money towards interesting movies.
CHS has a lot of electives, but there are more that would be better for a student’s time in the school day. There are classes we have to reach and that are required, so I think it should be noticed that not everybody has the class they want at CHS.

I think more language choices would be a a great addition to our school. This would allow students to explore more study abroad programs when they are in college. I would love to see Latin and Italian added to the list of languages available to take.

I agree with Marguerite–if there was one thing that I wish that I had throughout my high school career as far as education would be a wider range of languages to choose from. With only spanish, french, german, and little chinese, I felt that I had to settle with one of the languages, when in reality I wanted to take italian the entire time

Those are great ideas!! I really think you’re going somewhere with this. The big cheese should make this happen somehow! 🙂
