Dior is known for designing clothing, much like the dresses seen above. Founded in 1946, Dior is one of the leading names in fashion worldwide.

For years, Dior has been respected as one of the greatest international fashion companies. And the entire time, men were the ones designing the clothes. Maria Grazia Chiuri is the first female creative director at Dior and she did not wait to make it clear that things were going to change at Dior.  While Dior’s focus audience is usually women, most  of the designers are men.

While most designer’s choose to debut with clothes that closely resemble what would be considered the norm for Dior, Grazia Chiuri displayed clothes that challenged gender roles and completely differed from Dior’s regular style. Many immediately questioned Grazia Chiuri and wondered if this was the appropriate time to be making such a bold statement.

Many critics seemed really surprised that Grazia Chiuri deputed with such a strong and controversial statement, but Dior was founded in 1946 and is just now having a female in such a high leadership role. Of course Grazia Chiuri is going to debut with a feminist statement; she’s breaking history that should have been broken a long time ago.

Grazia Chiuri created a shirt displaying the popular statement “We should all be feminists” from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TEDTalk in 2013. The talk went viral soon after it was released and changed many people’s views on the feminism issue. Maria Grazia Chiuri’s allusion to this historic speech clearly shows the direction she wants to take the company.

Even though critics were not blown away by Grazia Chirui’s designs, they have not stopped talking about this new era for Dior. Dior is expected to have many more news worthy fashion shows while Maria Grazia Chirui is designing.
