Giving back: Students help young kids in sports
Several high school students are volunteering at local organizations to help coach kids’ sports teams.
Sophomore Justin Mitchiner and junior Jacob Cheeseborough coach a soccer team of kids ages 3-6 at the Carlisle Barricks.
Mitchiner said, “I’ve been looking for somewhere to volunteer, and it seemed like a dream job because I love kids and playing soccer.”
The boys plan out many drills for the kids to do while they are learning to play soccer and having fun.
Senior Megan Bisker also coached a elementary schoool basketball team during the winter since she wasn’t able to be apart of the school team due to tearing her ACL.
“My favorite thing about coaching was seeing the kids grow and become better basketball players,” said Bisker.
Senior Amber Bybee has been coaching the USA Star Cheerleading Twinkles team for 6 years.
Bybee said, “I wanted to do it because I enjoy being with kids and helping them become better cheerleaders.”
Many high school students help at the YMCA and several other organizations. Not only do they help the young kids in their athletic ability but it also teaches them a few things. They learn more about helping out in the community and becoming better people.

I think what they are doing is really good. They seem to be really helping out and helping kids earlier on is great for them in the future

Helping these children while their young will help them want to participate more in sports when their older. They’ll grow to love the sport and be eager to get better at it. I believe more teens should give back to the community like these students.

Jacob Cheeseborough is quite an upstanding young man. If more teens gave back to their community we would begin to have more physically active youth. I remember when I played soccer as a young kid. Most of the coaches were parents but if trustworthy teens became coaches I think I would have tried harder.

I think its great that the high school students are taking the time to help younger athletes. This is a great way to help build up the program from the bottom up and create a sport powerhouse like lacrosse is.

I think it’s great that they’re doing this and an excellent example of how to volunteer while still doing something you love.

I believe the kids giving back by helping out young kids is a very good thing. It can teach the students to help out kids more often and give back to the community.
