Girls volleyball gets bumped out of playoffs
Despite an impressive season, the varsity girls volleyball team will not be moving further in competition this year.
The team did advance to the District 3-AAA playoffs last week. They challenged Cocalico on Thursday Oct 23 and were victorious, so they moved on to a match against Hempfield, held on Sat Oct 25.
The Lady Herd had their hands full as they took on the top-ranked and undefeated Black Knights of Hempfield. The Herd fell in three sets of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-18.
Senior Allie Duffy had seven kills and one assist for the Herd, and junior Nicole Fuller had 17 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Cassidy Hoover contributed five kills to the stats.
The Hempfield game was expected to be a challenge. At a practice before the playoff matches, Coach Mike Beachy said, “We should be able to win on Thursday but a tough match against Hempfield on Saturday could provide for a very competitive match.”
JV also had a good season with a competitive spirit and a winning record.
Beachy said, “A couple of freshmen and sophomore players who played on JV and varsity provided a good mix of talent on the JV squad.”
Freshman Faith Renninger said that the season was successful on and off the court.
“The transition from middle school to high school went smoother, thanks to the older volleyball players” said Renninger.
Beachy added that “The success of the team had to do with strong relationships and hard work.”
Sophomore Elizabeth Young agreed with Beachy’s comment.
“The family atmosphere among the team has definitely given me more courage as a player and as a person,” said Young.
The varsity squad “had their ups and downs” according to Beachy. The Herd faced many challenging teams such as State College and Cumberland Valley. The team would finish with a 12-6 record in the regular season. After continuing to playoffs, the Herd finished with a 1-1 record, missing out on the competition for state champion.
Injuries and player changes allowed for inconsistency throughout the Varsity’s regular season. A graduating class of 6 seniors could lead to more inconsistency in the future.
However, Beachy is excited for the future by saying that there is “a lot of potential for next year due to skilled underclassmen.”

No matter the outcome, it is great to see Carlisle sports making an impact on the Commonwealth and District III. Between Cross Country, Volleyball, and Football, we have three teams who had winning records and moved on to playoffs. Being relatively new to the area, I am just learning about the history of Carlisle sports. Back in the 80s and 90s, people flocked to Carlisle because of our domination in sports; however, for much of the recent history our sports have been a joke. Now, many of our teams are experiencing success and it is great for school spirit and morale. I’m excited to see what teams like the volleyball and football teams have in store for the future because the future is so bright.

The volleyball season had its good moments and bad moments. Although this article was more about getting knocked out of playoffs, we were playing one of the top teams in the state. I feel this article could have talked more about the positive things that happened in our season. Carlisle volleyball is one of the best sports in terms of getting far into the season.

I feel this article is a great description of what happened in the season and how we all are a great big family. Even though we are graduating 6 extremely skilled girls I think that it will be tough to get back up on our feet again, but I surely know that we can do it. The seniors this year have shown me alot of courage and strength, we will miss them alot!!!!
Great Article Rowan!

This article only talks about the downfall of our season. We are and will still remain one of the most successful and high achieving teams at Carlisle. I understand that we lost, but we lost to the number one team in the district and arguably the number one team in the state. I struggle with the fact that the only article that has been posted this year is about our loss. The volleyball team still made it to the District 3-AAA playoffs, and won the first round. There are a lot of fall sports teams did not and will not make it to playoffs. It would have been nice if you talked about the senior girls playing together for so long, our previous big wins this season, or even our Play for Pink game that benefited breast cancer. I just would have hoped for a better article, rather than our loss this year to a team who is number one in the district.

The volleyball season had its ups and downs. There were multiple injuries this year that kept the team from reaching their goals. The season though was a lot more successful than it was in the past seasons. The team was very bonded this year and it helped a lot to get us out of the rough patches. The consistency though was what really made things difficult. The seniors have been together since seventh grade and it really helped this year. The seniors helped to keep the team bonded and fun. I do not think that I have had a better year on the team this year, been as close as I have been with the team, jv and varsity, and learned so much from the sport in general. I would have liked a better season but it was a great way to end my last year playing.
