Winter Storm Jonas: How the snow affected Carlisle sports

Winter storm Jonas left the Gene Evans gym empty, due to sports cancellations.

The recent Winter Storm Jonas brought as much as 35 inches of snow to the east coast, causing Carlisle High School to postpone many of its sports meets and games to later dates.

Even with the hastily plowed roads, it was deemed unsafe for teams to travel to their respective competitions.

The PIAA State Championship for Varsity Cheerleading that was scheduled to take place on January 22 was postponed to January 29, during which the CHS squad ranked #15 in the small preliminaries.

While the snow may have given the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team an extra week to prepare for the Reading Shootout with William Allen High School (postponed from January 23 to January 31), it also cut into their practice time for their other immediate games that were not cancelled or postponed.

“I think it kind of hurt us a bit because we didn’t have a chance to prepare for the Harrisburg game as much as we would have liked to,” Junior Ben Milligan said, referencing the game at Harrisburg High School on January 26 , during which Carlisle lost 58-78.

The January 25 game at Cumberland Valley High School was also postponed until last evening, February 3.

The Girl’s Varsity Basketball team also experienced a shift in schedule, with the home game against Cumberland Valley being moved from January 22 to February 1; this game resulted in a 33-71 loss.

Though disappointed by the prospect of having a weekend void of games or competitions, athletes refused to let a little snow get in the way of a good time.

“While I was snowed in during the storm, I went and dove in it for some practice because we are die hard swimmers,” said Junior Elizabeth Young, a member of the swim team.

This practice must have paid off as the girls swim team made school history on Tues Feb 2, tying State College and Hershey for the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division title.
