The CHS Golf team had a great season, finishing 12-18.

Another season has come and gone for the CHS golf team and although not many players made a hole in one, it was a successful season.  With an in season record of 12 wins and 18 losses, the Herd placed 3rd in their division behind CV and Mechanicsburg.

Coach Steve Wisner enjoyed the season and said, “This was our best overall finish as a team since I started coaching 10 years ago.”

Four CHS golfers qualified for the Mid-Penn tournament: seniors George Faller and Talha Abbasi for the boys team and seniors Julianna Hughes and Noelle Burley for the girls team.

Players worked hard all season to excel at a sport that is unfamiliar to many high school students.  Etiquette and a quiet demeanor is essential for excelling in a very calculated sport.

Wisner explains that in a high school match, “You take your top five players and counting the best four scores, dropping the highest score of the day.”  Contrary to other popular high school sports, golf plays lowest score wins.

“Coaches monitor play throughout the match and watch for accurate score keeping and any ruling questions that come up during the match,” added Wisner.

Golfers practice every day after school and often play 9 holes on a course or practice technique at the driving range.  The easygoing atmosphere on the course during practice is often a fond memory for many CHS golfers.

Senior Julianna Hughes recounts the season by saying her favorite memory was when “Coach finally let me and [a teammate] use a golf cart during practice.” During practice and matches, players are not allowed to use golf carts but rather have literally equal footing through walking the course.

Friendships on a tight knit team like the golf team form quickly.  Junior Jaxon Daugherty said, “During practice it’s a relaxing environment to just go play golf after school with some friends but it gets pretty serious when we have matches.”
