Athlete of the Month: Devon Chenot
More stories from Meg Tate
Junior Devon Chenot is new to Carlisle High School this year and has been making a splash in the green and white all season. This is the first year that he has been on a “swim team” as a high school swimmer. We caught up with him to hear about how the season has been going.
Q1: How long have you been swimming for?
A1: I’ve been swimming for 9 years this year.
Q2: What are your leadership roles on the team?
A2: My leadership roles range from encouraging my teammates at practice, to giving my boys team a congratulations after a tough meet or race.
Q3: What is it like for this being your first year at Carlisle?
A3: I’ve gotten to know a lot of new people, and I’ve had a new experience being on a team. Everyone cheers each other on, […] it’s a great feeling when you are on a relay, and you know everyone on your relay team is yelling for you to win, and all your teammates are cheering you on; it makes you realize that this is a great place to be.
Q4: Has being on the team got you more involved in the school?
A4: Being on the swim team has helped me meet some new people I did not know from club team swimming, and it has helped me meet new people who don’t swim by just talking about what swimming is about.
Q5: How did it feel to break the school record in the 100 fly?
A5: Breaking the 100 fly record was something I didn’t know I could do until I came to Carlisle. One day I looked at the records and realized I would be close. It’s honestly a blessing, because I know how fast Holden was in his day, and it’s amazing that I could even be mentioned with some of the great swimmers Carlisle has had.
Q6: Do you have any specific goals for the championship meets?
A6: My goals for the championship meets are to get some best times in my events, and get to districts and hopefully states with my relay teams. I hope to make states in my individual events as well.
Q7: Do you have any plans for your future in swimming?
A7: Next year I hope to continue to be a leader and contribute to the high school team. After that, I hope to swim in college wherever I can, and contribute to a college team while continuing my education.
