Lady Herd fall short against Shippensburg Greyhounds

The Shippensburg Greyhounds played the Lady Herd on January 20.

On January 20, 2018, the Carlisle girls basketball team went up against the Shippensburg Greyhounds.  With a record this season of 3-10, they went into the game determined and ready to make it a great game.  Many fans filled the gymnasium to watch the lady Herd play.

The Herd started off the game strong with senior forward Jesime Freet scoring the first two points of the game.  It wasn’t long till their opponent, the Greyhounds, took the lead by scoring three consecutive points.  This didn’t leave the Thundering Herd fans distressed for long. Less than a minute later, Freet helped the team make a comeback that brought their score to four making them up by one.

As the Greyhounds continued to score early in the game, senior guard Alexa Askins made a shot, that brought the Thundering Herd back in the lead with a score of 9-6.  The Herd took their first foul shot of the game with one minute and 23 seconds left in the first quarter.  After making one of their foul shots, they were up by six points.  At the end of the first quarter, the Carlisle Thundering Herd was winning with a score of 16-10.

After an intense first quarter for both teams, the teams continued to keep their fans at the edge of their seats.  Beginning of the second quarter with six minutes and 19 seconds left on the clock, the Greyhounds tied the game, making the score 16-16.  But it’s not long until the Herd strikes back and takes the lead halfway through the second quarter making the score 21-16.  But the climb for the Herd doesn’t stop there.

Shortly following several minutes of racing back and forth on the court, stealing the ball, and making a couple foul shots, Carlisle continued to keep their leading spot on the scoreboard with a score of 29-18 at the end of the second quarter and throughout the third quarter, making sure to keep a safe gap between the score, with the final score after the third quarter being 37-33.

Starting the fourth and final quarter, the fans were more than ever on the edge of their seats.  The Herd continued to keep the lead for the beginning of the fourth quarter, but the Greyhounds were closely trailing behind with a score of 44-40.  Towards the middle, feeling stressed and ready for a new strategy, the head coach for the Herd, Coach Mitchell, called a timeout with four minutes left on the clock.  Shippensburg continued to do their best effort of catching up to the Herd, and when there were two minutes left in the game, Greyhounds took the lead, leaving the Herd down by one with a score of 48-49.

Senior fan Ben Mouritsen said, “We had a huge lead, but now the last two minutes we are down by one making it a really close game.”

After several foul shots from both teams and strategic plays, Shippensburg Greyhounds ended up out mustering the Herd with a final score of 56-51.  With that being said, the Herd is very proud of the way that they played.

Freet said, “I am really proud of my team being able to work together and move the ball tonight.  I feel like in the first half we were able to see our players and get them the ball with a firm and fast past.”

The audience members were proud of the way that the Herd played tonight as well.  Parent Lisa Abbey said, “The Herd started the game out strong.  They also finished the game out strong.  I think that the Shippensburg Greyhounds making a comeback was something that they were not expecting and took them by surprise.”

This season, the Carlisle girls basketball team has had several games of which they are proud of.  This includes wins like their close game against Northern York with a final score of 53-49.  Even though this may not go on the record as a win for the lady Herd, it definitely goes in the book as a great game that doubles as a learning experience.
