CHS cheerleaders not cheering for the dress code
October 4, 2013
CHS cheerleaders spread Bison spirit by filling the fields with cheers and helping to raise money for school events. Yet a new concern has occupied them: dress code requirements.
In addition to the uniform basics of colorful, bodylines, tank top shell and skirt, the cheerleaders are also required to wear black leggings when wearing the uniforms to school.
Based upon the administrators, the leggings are looked at as a positive.
According to Julie Brent, the cheerleading coach, “The principals asked if [the cheerleaders] could wear leggings under the skirts as a compromise. The majority of the skirts do match the dress code requirements, but there are some exceptions because some girls have longer legs.”
The cheerleaders have strong feelings about the way they are permitted to dress.
“I feel we have earned a right to wear the uniforms without leggings,” senior Mackenzie Langer said. “Most are finger tip length anyway, plus it’s a school uniform and we should be able to wear them in school.”
Both the cheerleaders and the coach have made an effort to talk with the administration to lift the uniform restrictions, but the dress code still stays in effect to prevent potential complaints.
After all, many of the CHS students that are not cheerleaders feel like the rule is fair.
Senior Kalia Stallings said, “The girls’ skirts are too short, so they should have to wear something underneath, just like anyone would if they wore a skirt that was not finger tip length.”
Though the leggings are disliked by the ladies of the squad, those involved feel it is the best way to resolve the conflict about the skirts while still allowing the cheerleaders to spread school spirit with their more conservative look.

This is still an issue addressed today. A few weeks ago a girl was complaining that when her friend wears her cheer uniform it is fine, but if she wore a skirt the same length she would get dress coded. I think it brings up how sports sometimes seem to tower over all else.

I believe that requiring cheerleaders to wear leggings under their skirts is pointless. I believe that if girls volleyball players are allowed to wear just spendex, then cheerleaders should be allowed to wear just their uniforms. The leggings take away from the cheerleaders’ uniforms and take away from school spirit.

The article raises an issue more than that of wearing leggings. The article brings into affect the body types of cheerleaders. I believe that if the girls were not to wear leggings than they would pressured into changing their body type to fit the requirements of the dress code.

The article is well written and equally shows both sides of the topic. I agree that the dress code is fair, administration could have not let them where it at all. Even with the leggings their uniforms still look good so they should be happy with the compromise.

I think that this article raises a bigger issue than whether or not cheerleaders should have to wear leggings. If their uniforms are so “skimpy” that they raise concern, maybe more appropriate uniforms should be purchased. Though I personally don’t agree with the dress code at CHS, it is a rule and cheerleaders shouldn’t be exempt from that. After all, Carlisle spirit can still be spread with longer skirts.
