Scare up some fun this fall
With all of the fun fall events closing down for the season including Field of Screams, Hershey Park in the Dark, and the fun Oktoberfest, some are beginning to wonder what to do to fight their boredom on these autumn days. There are plenty of things to do, some even without the stress of finances in the way.
In a poll of 24 voters, going for hikes and walks through the park was the top voted thing to do this fall. Going on a hike or walk is great because of the beautiful autumn colors and the fresh air.
In a tie with going outdoors is staying inside, whether it be playing video games or cuddling up to read a book.
“I love looking out my window and seeing beautiful landscape created by the leaves and I enjoy the inside atmosphere because you know Thanksgiving is coming soon,” said sophomore Kristian Cooper.
Autumn is the perfect time to stay indoors. It is chilly, and blankets are just so welcoming.
Who doesn’t like those fun activities of carving a pumpkin or building a scarecrow? It’s cheap and fun to do; pumpkins are still in way after Halloween and scarecrows are good all autumn long! Not sure how to make a scarecrow? See our steps below!
Another favorite activity to do over the fall is roasting marshmallows. Those gooey marshmallows are great in between two graham crackers with a sweet layer of chocolate! Marshmallows are perfect for this time of year (well really anytime), but with the warm fire on those chilly nights, it gives you more of a reason to be outside.
Autumn is a wonderful time of year, full of colors and festivities. Instead of waiting two months for Christmas and winter to arrive, enjoy this time of year.
Fall Scarecrow
What you will need:
- A pair of pants
- Twine
- Hay
- Old button down shirt
- Old gardening gloves
- Burlap sack
- Scraps of fabric
- Safety pins
- Nails & hammer
- Staple gun
- Scissors
- 6 foot 2-by-4
- 4 foot 2-by-4
Steps:
Step 1: Stuff the pants
Tie off an old pair of pants at the bottom of each leg with twine. Fill the pants with hay until they are full and firm.
Step 2: Stuff the Shirt
Leaving the shirt unbuttoned, tuck it into the pants. Safety pin the shirt to the pants from the inside so as not to see the pins. Once done, begin stuffing the shirt with hay buttoning it up as you go.
Step 3: Build the Frame
Nail the 2-by-4’s into a cross, so the shorter piece is about 8-10 inches from the top of the longer piece.
Step 4: Attach to the Frame
Staple the scarecrow’s collar and pants to the longer piece of the frame. Then, staple the shirt cuffs and shoulders to the cross piece.
Step 5: Stand the Scarecrow Up
Dig a hole about a foot deep, put the end of the 2-by-4 into the hole, and fill the hole and pack it down.

Getting my garden ready for winter has always been my favorite part of fall. It’s always sad to see all of my hard summer work destroyed, but I also know how much fun I’ll have starting over in the spring!
