If you are interested in taking the ASVAB in the future, check out the official website and booklet for guidance.

As junior Destiny Balliot recently said, “ASVAB? What is that?”

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (also known as ASVAB) is a multiple choice test that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military.Students in Carlisle High School are offered the test each year. This year, the test was offered Feb 25.

Some students only take the test once.  The test is offered to sophomores, but the score doesn’t count. Junior and senior year is when the score actually matters.

“The test was the hardest test I have ever taken. I took it both last year and this year. I scored the same in pretty much all aspects, ” said junior Hannah Krouse

The ASVAB has been taken by over 40 million people. They have an official website you can visit if you have any questions regarding the test.

Those that took the test this year have already received their scores.

Senior Derek Wise said, “My test scores were higher than what I thought they would have been. I was happy and so were my parents.”

The test isn’t scored like any exam you might take in one of your classes. The test follows the IRT, better known as the Item Response Theory, which means the test is to see how well you do on each level challenged by the test.

Although a military career is commonly found amongst people in Carlisle, some students would rather take a different road for the future.

Senior Regina Oyeson said, “I never thought about taking the test, and probably never will. I already know I have no interest in the military.”

Oyeson is not alone in this thought.

“I love that we have so many people dedicated to the military; it’s great! But I don’t think it is for me. I haven’t taken the ASVAB, but many of my friends have. I heard it was very challenging and made your mind really think in some areas,” said senior Sophie Stevens.

Taking the ASVAB helps kids get a better understanding towards their future.  The ASVAB is offered to anyone, whether you want to join the military or not. It allows you to see your strengths and weaknesses in career choice.

But on the other hand, some kids who are new to the school district don’t know much about the test. With little to almost no information given about the exam before offered to students, some students aren’t sure whether or not to take it.

With questions about what your future may hold, the ASVAB will give you information about your strengths and weaknesses,  and help you get prepared for your career and life guide.
