Graduation gowns becoming one color
Graduation will look a little different this year.
Class of 2015 is graduating in all green gowns, instead of girls being in white and boys being in green. Some CHS students couldn’t care less, while others are really angry about it.
The students graduating this year have different opinions on this subject, but is all green a good or a bad thing?
Senior Paige Finkenbinder said, “I feel like we should wear different colors, and the different colors showed the difference between genders. With the caps on we’ll look like boys anyway, so I wish we didn’t all wear green for our graduation gowns.”
A different approach can be made through a guy’s eye. They have only been wearing green forever now, and girls are the only ones who switch from white gowns to green ones.
Senior Logan Redcay said, “I’ve heard that it can be a bit sexist, which I completely understand because it seems unfair for a girl to have to wear green like the guys or any color the same as the guys.”
Yet according to 12th grade principal Mike Black, there’s more to the color change than what students may realize.
Black said, “Our dominant color is green; the graduates would look more unified in this color. Graduation is already expensive enough as it is, and girls are the only ones that have to find something special to add on to the bill with their dress underneath the gown and shoes, while guys can just wear stuff they already have in their closet.”
2015 isn’t the only year CHS decided to dress boys and girls the same color gown.
“It’s been done before, and graduates this year get to keep their gowns rather than delaying students to get their certificate until they return their gowns,” said Black.
There are the ups and downs of the graduates dressing up in all green, whether we agree with the situation or we don’t want to accept it. Graduation isn’t about the color we wear; it’s about the accomplishments we’ve made.

I think that, while it does spark some controversy, it is thoughtful of the administration to think of the money involved in the situation. It is true that the girls would have to, if they did not already have one, buy a dress that would not be noticeable under the white gowns. For the time being, I think this is the best way to deal with the situation until they can think of a different way to keep the cost down for all involved.

I prefer all green because as a female I don’t think it’s fair for the girls to have to find a dress that will look good under white. I am also excited that we are going to be able to keep them this year.

Genders should never be forced to wear or do different things. There should be a choice, if girls want to wear white they should get the option, same for boys if they want to switch. The separation of genders makes some people uncomfortable.

I was initially upset about the change from green to white because I wanted my grad gown to be the same in pictures as those of my two older sisters. As I think about it more and let it settle, though, having all green gowns makes sense. I’m glad I won’t have to wear a white dress under my gown, and I like green as a color better anyway. The class of 2015 will start a new tradition (which is really going back to an old tradition but oh well).

Personally, I am perfectly fine with only wearing green. Having to find a white dress can be quite the hassle, and wearing green will make it much easier. While I do understand why people want to wear white in order to keep tradition, I don’t see the problem with wearing one color. As you said, graduation isn’t about what we are wearing but how far we’ve come.

I think keeping the whole graduating class in one color is a good thing. it does make the class look unified and presents the image that the whole class is in it together.

I feel that it isn’t fair for students both males and females to have to wear green for graduation day. It’s like breaking a tradition, it has pretty much always been that females wear white and males wear green. They should at least give a student vote for whether there should be change in school gown color for all students. The school should also take in consideration that finding certain color dresses can be difficult. Which leaves me wondering, are females required to wear a white dress under their now green graduation gown…

I think that the boys and girls should be wearing different colors on graduation. we have two school colors, so both of them should be shown and it only makes sense that It would be between boys and girls. we want to be shown as a unified, diverse school, and to be able to see the differences. not to be just chunked together in a sea of green.
