CHS offers CNA program to help students receive valuable training

A CNA is a certified nurse’s assistant. Becoming a CNA can be very difficult, as those who wish to pursue this career path need years of training and experience. Obtaining the funds to receive this training and take classes regarding to this can be very difficult for most people. What has Carlisle High School done to help students interested in having careers in the medical field?
“The CNA program at Carlisle High School is a certified nurse’s assistant program through partnership with the Carlisle Regional Medical Center and HACC,” said Tracy Stritch, Cooperative Education Coordinator.
Students that apply go through a three week rotation at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center before they begin the course, not only having the opportunity to go to all departments of the hospital, but also to get certified before they leave high school. The program costs around $1,000 overall, but students are encouraged to apply for a scholaship through the Partnership for Better Health.
“This is kind of a stepping stone for them,” Stritch said. “It gives the students hands-on practical experience.”
Though the program helps, some of those in it join the work force as a CNA before or as soon as they graduate; others have to wait a bit longer, as you must be 18 years of age or older to start working in this position.
“If students are not 18 when they finish the program, they can do volunteer work at the hospital or work in dietary or nutrition services in retirement communities or nursing homes,” Stritch said.
All students who wish to go through the program are required to get physicals, blood work, PPDs, background checks, and some form of transportation. Good grades and attendance are important for those who wish to be in the program.
If Raquel Santiago, a student in the program, could give advice to students thinking about joining, it would be to make sure to pay attention during class and always listen to the instructor.
After all, as Ava Neil, another student in the program, points out, it will be worth it.
“This is going to give me the opportunity to start working as a CNA in high school, so when I go to college to further my career in medicine, I’ll know a lot more than people who are just starting out or haven’t done this before,” said Neil.
