Coming together: class councils work behind the scenes to plan CHS events

Members of this year’s Senior Class Council volunteered last year at the Color Run.

Class council is an organization that focuses on making CHS a more interesting place for students and staff. For instance, they do things such as help with homecoming in relation to coming up with spirit days, setting up the day of, selling chocolate and starting many more fundraisers for everyone to be able to participate in. All of these events are held in order to benefit the school.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Matthew Keating. a freshman on class council. “[Freshman adviser] Mr. Dutrey’s a cool cat.”

Keating added, “My brother has been in the class council since his freshman year and has recommended it.”

Being on class council requires students to take extra time out of their schedules, which means that they might not have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports.

“We meet on club days and sometimes Friday before school,”said Keating.

Being on council helps students be involved with the major events of the school year.

“I chose to be on class council so I could be more in the know and get more involved,” said Vasoula Petsinis, a sophomore on class council. “It also seemed fun.”

Each class at CHS has a class council, in which expectations change as students progress through the years.

“Not much has changed from last year to this year except that it’s just a little more demanding of your time because you have to do a lot more things,” said Petsinis.

Occasions such as homecoming and prom seem to be a huge thing for class council. These two events are something that students look forward to every year.

“As of now we just have meetings every club day, but when big things come up like for example when we had homecoming and had to do decorations, we’d usually come in early once a week,” said Petsinis.

Big events that take place at CHS cause the class councils to have meetings more frequently because the details for these occasions are time-consuming.

“Class council as a junior is really awesome because you are able to play a role in big school events such as homecoming, important school fundraisers, adopt a family and even deciding the theme for prom!” said Devon Sweeder, a junior on class council. “I chose to be on class council because I love working with other people. It’s awesome to discuss ideas and feed off of one another. Everyone in class council enjoys working together and inventing ideas for our school to be an even better place.”

Class council allows students to be able to raise money, in the event that it will either go towards benefiting the school or towards a good cause.

Along with putting events together and being in charge of fundraisers comes fun times with other students that may have never had the experience before.

“It is the BEST! We have so much fun every time we get together. Most of us have been on class council since freshmen. We are really close even outside of class council activities,” said Grace Winton, a senior on class council.

Friendships are being created between students in class council. They are getting along with one another, which allows the entire group to be stronger as a whole overall.

“Class council is a great experience and I really recommend it!” said Sweeder.
