A cutout of Frederick Douglass, a Black author and orator, standing tall, looking over Carlisle. Douglass stopped in town while on a speaking tour and within his speech, called out the racism within Carlisle and communities like Carlisle. While staying in town, Douglass’ hotel, the Bentz House Hotel (later the Worthington), told him that he was to eat his meals in his room rather than in the dining room where the white guests were staying. Douglass was correct to call out Carlisle, as restaurants banned people of color from walking through their front doors, providing a separate entrance. In what is known today as the Carlisle Theatre, people of color were banned to the balcony; separations of this nature continued in Carlisle well into the 1960s.
